Everything in these movies seems to be for Snyder alone. It’s as if the only point of four and half hours of movie runtime is for him to prove that he can spend all this money to capture his meticulous little scenes on his camera, refracted through his gauzy vintage lenses. Never before has the act of filmmaking felt more like someone painting Warhammer figures in their basement.

The most frustrating part, however, is Snyder’s refusal to ever delve deeper into the universe he creates. We see this in Zack Snyder’s Justice League, where he clearly has an entire library of stories and whole universes planned out, and he ever so subtly hints at them.

Set against the rage-inducing structure, annoying performances and embarrassing scripting of Batman v Superman, Justice League initially feels like a major step forward from its predecessor. At the very least, the new film has some internal logic and the ability to sustain a train of thought about a character or a plot point. But this is a limp improvement – being mostly functional doesn’t create a lot of thrills.
